18:00:00

Join us for the Academy's first official Commander League! In this casual, four-week league, you will utilize your MTG card knowledge to build and compete with up to two Commander decks that follow the league's deckbuilding guidelines. Sling spells to meet individual and group objectives that earn you points, so you can be crowned the Academy's Commander champion!

This four-week campaign is a beta test—we want to offer a Commander league for years to come, so we want to ensure we can perfect the process before we open up more seats!

Event Dates: 5/31, 6/7, 6/14 & 6/21

Entry Fee: $10

Registration & Administration:

To grab a seat, please complete ALL of the following steps:

  1. Review all of the information in this listing.
  2. Purchase a ticket.
  3. Complete the registration form by Saturday, May 27th.

We'll be using a dedicated Discord channel as the primary means of communication and organization for this event. If you haven't already, we strongly recommend that you join the Academy's Discord server. Once you've registered for the league, we'll add you to the relevant Discord channel.

Remember, this league will last four weeks and relies on the participation of all players. While we understand busy schedules and will do our best to accommodate you, it's also important that you're committed to participating each week.

Deckbuilding Guidelines:

  • Build up to two, one hundred card decks.
  • Each deck must fall under a $200 dollar budget.
  • You may only use mana rocks (artifacts) with mana value three (3) or more. This includes mana rocks that have mana creation, land fetch, cost reduction, or mana support abilities. See this link for the complete list.

Format & Rules:

Players will play two games at each week's league session. We will rank players based on the points they earn each game. While your placement each game earns you points, there are also goals you can achieve at an individual level and wildcard goals the table can achieve to earn points! You can see the categories and goals you can achieve here.

  • We'll follow all of the Commander Rules Committee's rules and banlist.
  • All decks must follow the league's deckbuilding guidelines.
  • All decklists must be submitted using Moxfield. Prices and decks are locked once you submit your deck, so you won't have to worry about price changes taking you over the budget cap!
  • You may register up to two decks.
  • Your top three scores over the four weeks will count toward your final score. This allows players to have a bye week if they need it.
  • Players must submit one score sheet per evening, signed by the other players at the table. Failure to submit your sheet will result in 0 points earned for the evening.
  • You are allowed one free mulligan per game. After the free mulligan, normal mulligan rules apply.

About the Professors: Allen Lebeck and Scott Kaliszak have graciously volunteered their time to get the Academy's Commander league up and running! Scott Kaliszak is a music teacher by day and a red-headed chaos incarnate by night, frequenting the store on Wednesdays for some spell slinging shenanigans. He enjoys the art of deckbuilding, and strives to play the worst cards in the best of ways at the bewilderment and amusement of the table. Allen Lebeck is a nurse by night that participates in a variety of store events, avidly supporting the board game, Warhammer and MTG communities. His playstyle favors casual gaming, usually playing card combinations that drastically alter the board state and promote critical thinking and adaptive skills from opponents.

To keep the league casual, prizes will be low in monetary value but high in fun!
