Join us for the Academy's third rendition of the Commander League! In this six week league, you will utilize your MTG card knowledge to build two 100-card decks that follow the criteria set forth by the league guidelines. Sling spells to meet individual and group objectives that earn you points, and compete to be crowned the Academy commander champion!

The Basics
Event Dates: Tuesdays,  2/28 - 4/4
Entry Fee: $10
Player Spots: 24

Registration & Administration
To register for the league, please complete ALL of the following steps:

  1. Review all of the information in this listing.
  2. Purchase a ticket.
  3. Complete the registration form by Sunday, February 25th.

We'll be using a dedicated Discord channel as the primary means of communication and organization for this event. If you haven't already, we strongly recommend that you join the Academy's Discord server.

Remember, this league will last six weeks and relies on the participation of all players. While we understand busy schedules and allow bye weeks for flexibility, it's also important that you're committed to participating.

Deckbuilding Guidelines
Decks must follow these rules:

  • Build up to two 100-card decks.
  • One deck must follow the pauper commander rules—your commander is uncommon, and every card in your deck is common (full rules here).
  • Your second deck must be mono-colored—commanders, partner commanders, or commanders/backgrounds must combine to be one color.
  • All decks must be under a $120 budget using TCGPlayer prices. (You can set this on Moxfield!)
  • You may only use mana rocks (artifacts) with mana value of two or more. This includes mana rocks that have mana creation, land fetch, cost reduction, and/or mana support. (See this link for the full list.)

Format & Rules
Players will play two games at each week's league session. We will rank players based on the points they earn each game. While your placement each game earns you points, there are also goals you can achieve at an individual level and wildcard goals the table can achieve to earn points! You can see the categories and goals you can achieve here.

During week two, we will introduce Archenemy rules, where some familiar faces from around the Academy will bring powerful decks to take down you and two of your teammates! Using your mono-colored decks, you and your team will attempt to defeat the archenemy and their schemes while earning points and achieving group objectives!

  • We'll follow all of the Commander Rules Committee's rules and banlist.
  • All decks must follow the league's deckbuilding guidelines.
  • All decklists must be submitted using Moxfield. Prices and decks are locked once you submit your deck, so you don't have to worry about price fluctuations as the league progresses!
  • At the conclusion of week three (3/14), you may request to adjust your decks. You may add/remove/switch out up to ten cards from each deck. Your deck must remain under the $120 budget after the swap is complete. You must use your original commanders. More information will be provided after the first week of the league.
  • You may register up to two decks—one pauper and one mono-colored.
  • Your top four scores over the six weeks will count toward your final score. This allows players to have two bye weeks if they need them.
  • Players must submit one score sheet per evening, signed by the other players at the table. Failure to submit your sheet will result in 0 points earned for the evening.
  • You are allowed one free mulligan per game. After the free mulligan, normal mulligan rules apply.
  • During a game, turns will be called when there are five minutes remaining in the round. Each player will have one turn, then placement for that round will be determined by the highest life total.

Meet the Organizers
Scott Kaliszak is a music teacher by day and a red-headed chaos incarnate by night, frequenting the store on Wednesdays for some spell slinging shenanigans. He enjoys the art of deckbuilding, and strives to play the worst cards in the best of ways at the bewilderment and amusement of the table. He will serve in a "behind the scenes" role for this campaign.
Ryan Thomas is a regular face behind the desk during Commander Night, but is excited to dive back into league for his favorite format in Magic.
James "Captain" Kirk is recently installed as a judge for the Academy and, as father of two, looks forward to getting out of the house.

Prize Structure
To keep the league casual, prizes will be low in monetary value but high in fun!
